The Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation launches the Sofia Carson Prodigy Scholarship

A four-year scholarship towards a bachelor's degree at Berklee College of Music and 43 additional scholarships are available to music students in need

MIAMI (JAN. 18, 2022) — The Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation® is accepting applications for its 2022 scholarships beginning today. This includes their prestigious $200,000 Prodigy Scholarship co-sponsored, this year, by Sofia Carson, Global Ambassador for the Foundation, toward a bachelor's degree at Berklee College of Music. In addition, three Gifted Tuition, and 40 Tuition Assistance Scholarships will be awarded to music students admitted to universities of their choice. All scholarships are awarded to exceptionally talented music students, with financial need, to support their educational and musical aspirations. The Foundation is committed to investing in future Latin music creators from around the globe.

The four-year namesake Prodigy Scholarship, this year the Sofia Carson Scholarship, was created seven years ago and has been co-sponsored by Latin stars including Enrique Iglesias (2015), Juan Luis Guerra (2016), Miguel Bosé (2017), Carlos Vives (2018), Emilio and Gloria Estefan (2019), Julio Iglesias (2020) and Juanes (2021). This year’s scholarship will fulfill one exemplary student's dream of completing a bachelor's degree, in music at Berklee College of Music, starting in the 2022 fall semester.

The Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation remains committed to help support closing the gender gap in the music industry.  In the 2020-21 season, the four most valuable scholarships were awarded to women, which represents 64% ($531,000) of the total scholarship amount awarded. Launching this year’s Prodigy Scholarship in partnership with Sofia Carson provides invaluable economic support and mentoring to an aspiring musician. Both Sofia and the Foundation are hopeful that Sofia’s co-sponsorship will serve as inspiration to young women wishing to pursue a professional career in music.

In 2019, songstress and actor, Sofia Carson, became the Global Ambassador for the Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation, advocating, promoting, and increasing awareness of the Foundation’s mission and educational programs. As part of her efforts, she has participated in countless events to help raise funds and promote the primary charitable focus of providing scholarships to students interested in Latin music as well as grants to scholars, and organizations, worldwide, to research and preserve diverse Latin music genres, and music education programs.

“As Global Ambassador of the Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation, it has been my privilege to witness, and contribute, towards realizing this transformational and life-changing mission. This year the Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation will distribute a maximum of $900,000 among 44 talented music students between the ages of 17 and 25 with financial constraints, as follows:

  • One Sofia Carson Scholarship awarded to one student for up to $200,000 to earn a bachelor’s degree from Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, starting in fall 2022

  • Three four-year Gifted Tuition Scholarships of up to $100,000 each will be awarded for students to earn a bachelor's degree in music starting in fall 2022 at the university of their choice.

  • Forty Tuition Assistance Scholarships of up to $10,000 each will be awarded to students pursuing a bachelor's degree in music. This is a one-time award that will cover tuition costs over one year: the fall 2022 and spring 2023 semesters.

Each year, the Foundation's Scholarship Committee carefully evaluates applications from a highly competitive pool of aspiring musicians on a variety of skillsrigorous requirements that are both academic and artistic in nature. To date, the Foundation has awarded over $6.5 million in scholarships, grants, musical instrument donations and educational programming, and events, worldwide.

Starting today, Tuesday, January 18, 2022 the application will go live at: www.latingrammyculturalfoundation.com. As part of the process, students must complete an online application, submit two audition videos, two letters of recommendation, and an acceptance letter from an accredited university along with two completed essays. The materials can be submitted in English, Spanish or Portuguese.  The deadline to apply is 11:59 p.m. EDT on April 10, 2022.

MIAMI (SEPT. 19, 2024) — Today, the Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation®, in partnership with Chase, hosted its fifth Educación Financiera financial health education workshop as part of the Latin GRAMMY® Master Series. Latin GRAMMY® winner and GRAMMY® nominee Pedro Capó kicked off the workshop, Essentials of Budgeting in the Music Arts Industry”.

Chase representative, Ken Frazier discussed the importance of budgeting to build and maintain financial wellness. The event, hosted by Ana Jurka, TV personality and award-winning journalist, at Coral Reef High School in Miami, drew more than 500 students in person. Together the special guests, along with the Foundation and Chase, shared the goal of amplifying the importance of financial education from access to money and credit management in building a career in Latin music and the arts.

Through this session, hundreds of high school students, including emerging musicians, gained an understanding of budget management and resources—along with expert advice.

“Coral Reef Senior High School is thrilled to welcome the Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation and Chase to Miami’s Mega-Magnet,” said Nicole Bergé-MacInnes, Principal, Coral Reef High School. “Over 500 of our Magnet Band, Chorus, Orchestra, Dance, Drama, IB & AP Spanish, and Business & Finance Magnet students participated in the “Essentials of Budgeting in the Music Arts Industry” workshop with Latin GRAMMY winner Pedro Capo. Giving our students the opportunity to learn about the music business and gain practical financial knowledge was a unique opportunity for our Barracuda family.”

MIAMI (SEPTEMBER 17, 2024) — The Latin Recording Academy® has announced the nominees for the 25th Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards®, the preeminent international honor celebrating excellence in Latin music, and the only accolade awarded by music industry professionals. The Latin Academy's membership body of music creators, who represent all genres and creative disciplines—including recording artists, songwriters, producers, recording engineers and mixers—vote during the Awards Process.

This year's Record Of The Year category features an exceptional group of creators, technical professionals and artists across a variety of genres who reflect the diversity within Latin music and its growing cultural influence worldwide.

The category of Album Of The Year showcases an extraordinary diversity of genres, genders, countries of origin and a mix of new and established music makers including: Ángela Aguilar, Camilo, Xande de Pilares, Karol G, Kany García, Juan Luis Guerra 4.40, Mon Laferte, Carín León, Residente and Shakira.

In addition, a new field (Electronic Music) and two categories (Best Latin Electronic Music Performance and Best Contemporary Mexican Music Album) were added to the Latin GRAMMY® Awards Process this year.

The first group of nominees for the Best Contemporary Mexican Music Album category features an impressive group of artists and creators that have helped the genre gain momentum: Natanael Cano, DannyLux, Grupo Frontera, Carín León, Michelle Maciel and Peso Pluma.

The Best New Artist category showcases a unique set of nominees, whose diversity reaffirms The Latin Academy's commitment to providing opportunities for all artists. Nominated this year are Agris, Kevin Aguilar, Darumas, Nicolle Horbath, Latin Mafia, Cacá Magalhães,

Os Garotin, Iñigo Quintero, Sofi Saar and Ela Taubert. Additionally, this year’s nominee list includes recent Best New Artist nominees including María Becerra, Juliana, Leon Leiden, Nabález and Nicole Zignago.

"As we approach the 25th edition of the Latin GRAMMYs® our Awards Process is more robust than ever, with our membership evaluating over 23,000 entries this year," said Manuel Abud, CEO of The Latin Recording Academy. "The Latin GRAMMYs have grown in an amazing way to become a fundamental platform for music and culture. We are proud to share this year’s nominees, an international and diverse group of creators representing the richness and vastness of today’s Latin music."

The 25th Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards nominees were selected in 58 categories and reflect an expansive range of artists who released recordings during the eligibility period (June 1, 2023 through May 31, 2024). All songs that are considered for nominations must be new songs and contain a minimum percentage of lyric content (60%) in Spanish, Portuguese, or any native regional dialect.

The final round of voting to determine the Latin GRAMMY winners will begin on September 27, 2024. The 25th Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards will air live from the Kaseya Center in Miami on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2024. The three-hour telecast will be produced by TelevisaUnivision, the leading Spanish language media and content company in the world, and will air live on Univision, Galavisión and ViX beginning at 8 p.m. ET/PT (7 p.m. Central). Preceding the telecast will be the Latin GRAMMY Premiere® ceremony, a long-established evening full of unforgettable performances and heartfelt acceptance speeches, where the winners in most categories will be announced.

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA (SEPTEMBER 5, 2024) – The Latin Recording Academy® hosted the Best New Artist Showcase with previous Latin GRAMMY® winner in the Best New Artist category, Joaquina, and Nicki Nicole, who was also nominated in the same category in 2020. For the first time, the event took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, at Michelangelo Legend.

The Best New Artist Showcase series is the keystone of the partnership between Mastercard and The Latin Recording Academy. Argentina native Nicki Nicole then took the stage and offered a setlist featuring more intimate versions and subtle arrangements of her songs “Dispara”, “Qué Le Pasa Conmigo”, “8AM”, “Plegarias” and “Llámame”, which created the perfect atmosphere for all the guests to enjoy this special evening.

The Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation® Opens Applications For Its Latin Music Research And Preservation Grant Program

Talented musicologists and educational institutions will receive a total of $60,000 for research and preservation of Latin music sponsored for the first time by PepsiCo Juntos Crecemos

Deadline to apply is November 1, 2024, 11:59 p.m. ET. 

MIAMI (AUGUST 22, 2024) — The Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation® announced that applications are officially open for its 2024 Latin Music Research and Preservation Grant program. This marks the second time the Foundation has opened the program this year. For the first time in the program’s decade long history, the program will be sponsored. In celebration of the Foundation’s 10-year anniversary, PepsiCo Juntos Crecemos is increasing the number of grants available from four to six, and the grant amounts from $5,000 to $10,000 each, for a total of $60,000 distributed amongst projects. This program provides grants to music institutions, nonprofit organizations, musicologists, and researchers around the world who are enhancing and preserving Latin music heritage. Grants offered by the Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation fall into two categories:

Three (3) Research Grants for a maximum amount of $10,000 each, which fund projects focused on historical research, folklore and anthropology of Latin music genres.

Three (3) Preservation Grants for a maximum of $10,000 each, which support projects aiming to archive and preserve the heritage of Latin music.

Applications from qualified candidates will be reviewed by a committee of experts from Latin America, the Iberian Peninsula and the United States. Six applicants will each receive a grant with a maximum value of $10,000. 

“Research and Preservation Grants play an important role in ensuring the legacy of Latin music and future creators, we are grateful to PepsiCo Juntos Crecemos for their generosity,” said Raquel “Rocky” Egusquiza, Executive Director of the Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation. “Together, we are able to increase our impact and support deserving projects in fulfillment of our mission.”

“Since launching PepsiCo Juntos Crecemos in 2021, our mission has been to strengthen Hispanic businesses and communities, while celebrating and preserving Hispanic culture,” said Esperanza Teasdale, Vice President & General Manager, Hispanic Business Unit, PepsiCo Beverages North America. “We’re proud to extend our support to the Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation to advance the research and preservation of Latin music, which is one of the most significant and diverse elements of Hispanic culture.”

Since its inception in 2015, the program has awarded more than $195,000 in grants to support projects, one of which received a Latin GRAMMY® and GRAMMY® Award.
