MIAMI (OCT. 2, 2019)— The Latin Recording Academy® has announced that Cuban artist Alberto Lago is the official artist of the 20th Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards®. Lago's work will be featured prominently on posters, program books, tickets, and other materials before and during the 20th Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards, which will broadcast live on Univision Network from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Nov. 14 from 8–11 p.m. ET/PT (7 p.m. Central).
"Alberto's canvases are filled with radiant colors, symbols of happiness, and messages of hope," said Gabriel Abaroa Jr., President/CEO of The Latin Recording Academy. "These elements converge to create a unique and vibrant piece depicting the music we are celebrating at the 20th Latin GRAMMY Awards."
An acclaimed artist from Manzanillo, Cuba, Lago graduated from Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana, Cuba. He works almost exclusively with fluorescent pigments and his canvases transform under the effects of black light. Lago’s work abounds in popular culture symbols of happiness, such as butterflies, smiley faces, and flowers.
"In a convulsive and chaotic world we need to focus on positivity and seeking light," said Lago. "Music provides people with an escape. In creating the art for the 20th Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards, I wanted to create a form of escapism that sends a message of love, happiness, and spirituality."
Lago has had numerous exhibitions, and has also participated in group shows in Cuba. In 2011, he won the Premio Internazionale di Pittura ISOLE Sardegna-Cuba, and this fall he will be artist-in-residence at Malévoz Cultural Quarter in Monthey, Switzerland, from where he plans to watch the Latin GRAMMY Awards.
